Spain's La Manga Club achievements recognized on 40th ...

La Manga Club and The European Tour have both come a long way since they launched in 1972 and Tour chief executive George O'Grady has joined the chorus of approval for the Spanish resort as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.

NFL: Texans WR Andre Johnson hurts groin, leaves practice

NFL notes ? Receiver sidelined with mild strain.

Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson says he?ll miss "a week or so" after a minor groin injury in the team?s second morning practice.

Johnson fell awkwardly running a route on Sunday morning and had an MRI exam later in the day that showed a "mild strain."

"It just tightened up on me," the five-time Pro Bowl receiver said. "I had hit the ground pretty hard, stretching out for a ball. That was pretty much it."

Johnson missed nine regular-season games last season with hamstring injuries and was sidelined from the first organized team activities in the spring after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

"Nothing that I?m not used to, doing rehab," Johnson said. "It?s very frustrating, but it happens, man. I wish I had some control over it. Unfortunately, I don?t."

Coach Gary Kubiak said Johnson wanted to continue practicing, but Kubiak took the cautious route. Johnson watched the rest of the outdoor half of the workout with a towel wrapped around his head, then went to Reliant Stadium when the practice moved indoors.

"I felt pretty good, because he wanted to go back out there," Kubiak said Sunday afternoon. "When a guy is telling you that, I don?t think it?s too bad."

Johnson sat out three to four weeks after his knee surgery in May, and he turned 31 in July. After playing in all 16 games in 2008 and ?09, Johnson sat out three games late in 2010 with a sprained right ankle. Last year, he hurt his right hamstring against Pittsburgh in October then hurt his left hamstring against Atlanta in December.

GAAR proposals too vague: International Business Council - okycos

New Delhi: A group of leading US-based MNCs have expressed their concern over the draft GAAR taxation proposals, saying that the proposed regulations are ?too vague? to comfort the business investors.

Besides, there is a risk that the panel proposed for reviewing the cases of GAAR applications could become a ?rubber-stamp? approval entity for the position of tax administrators, the US Council For International Business (USCIB) has written to the Finance Ministry.

USCIB is a leading industry group and has more than 300 top US-based global companies as members, which include American Express, Apple, BP, Citigroup, Coca-Cola, Dow Chemical, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft and PepsiCo.

Providing its comments on the recently proposed draft guidelines regarding implementation of General Anti-Avoidance Rules (GAAR), USCIB has said that the ?proposed guidelines are too vague to provide certainty to business investors.?

?For example, an important part of certainty is respecting the obligations imposed by double taxation agreements between treaty partners. Treaty obligations should generally not be overridden by GAAR provisions,? the letter noted.

?? We believe that the application of the GAAR rules in this manner would constitute an impermissible unilateral amendment of the United States-Indian Treaty,? it added.

The USCIB also said that the guidelines do not clarify the role of a three-member panel, whose approval is necessary for the tax administration to proceed with a GAAR case.

?That the taxpayer would still have access to competent authority procedures and Indian courts should be made clear. In addition, it would seem unlikely that all of the potential applications of the GAAR could be reviewed by a single three member panel, particularly given the fact that senior officials are required to participate on the panel and the short time frames associated with the process.

?We applaud the recognition that these issues need to be resolved quickly, but are concerned that this will lead to ?rubber stamp? approvals of the tax administration?s position.

?This may be the case even if multiple panels are set up, as the guidelines permit. Thus the role and structure of the three-member panel should be more clearly defined,? it said.

Introduction of GAAR, which was proposed by then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in March to check tax evasion, had triggered strong opposition by foreign investors following which its implementation was postponed till April, 2013.

The Finance Ministry came out with draft guidelines on GAAR last month, wherein it invited comments from the stakeholders.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also set up a committee earlier this month for holding consultations to bring in greater clarity and prepare a roadmap by? 30 September for implementation of GAAR.

In its comments, USCIB said the examples given in the draft proposals ?are very general and simple?.

Noting that the real cases will be more complex, USCIB said ?this lack of clarity will create the opportunity for subjective interpretations by the tax authorities that may result in numerous disputes?.

USCIB said the guidelines may be intended to provide clarity to taxpayers, but ?the current guidance in the examples leaves significant uncertainty.?

USCIB also supported the comments submitted earlier this month by the Asia Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and the Capital Markets Tax Committee of Asia, concerning the application of the GAAR rules to the financial markets. ?Capital markets need a safe harbour that does not require them to disavow treaty benefits to which they may be entitled,? it added.

Earlier, a number of US industry associations had written to the US government?s Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, expressing their concern over the proposed GAAR regulations.? These industry bodies included the Financial Executives International, Financial Services Forum, Information Technology Industry Council, Investment Company Institute, Managed Funds Association, National Foreign Trade Council, Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, Software Finance and Tax Executives Council, TechAmerica, US Chamber of Commerce, US-India Business Council, as also USCIB.

They requested Geithner to address these concerns with representatives of the Indian government. The industry bodies had said that ?if enacted, the proposals will have a significant negative effect on member companies operating in India, their customers and shareholders, and investment in India.?

Whereas the size of other structures, like genitals and wings, are relatively constant across male beetles, the size of their horns varies greatly. Some males have tiny bumps whereas others have sprawling ornamentation, which can be an advantage when competing for females, as shown in the video above. Diplomats: Iran nuke talks remain stalled

VIENNA (AP) ? A senior EU official is reporting no progress in the newest international push to persuade Iran to curb activities that could be used to make nuclear weapons, leaving the resumption of high-stakes negotiations with Tehran in doubt, diplomats said Friday.

A meeting Tuesday between senior EU envoy Helga Schmid and Ali Bagheri, Iran's deputy nuclear negotiator, was an attempt to restart top-level nuclear talks between Tehran and six world powers after the last round in Moscow fizzled on June 19.

Neither side wants to give up the talks. Iran seeks relief from sanctions, including recently enacted international embargoes on its oil, its main source of revenue. The U.S and other countries at the table with Tehran fear that the failure of negotiations could prompt Israel to make good on its threat to attack Tehran's nuclear installations ? a move that could draw Washington into the conflict.

The six want the Islamic Republic to end enriching uranium to a level that can be turned quickly into fissile warhead material. Tehran refuses, says it is enriching only to make nuclear fuel and medical isotopes and insists it has a right to enrich under international law.

With no progress back in June, the two sides agreed to kick the talks down to low-level experts in an attempt to better understand each-others' positions.

That expert meeting in June was followed by the Schmid-Bagheri talks, which looked for signs of possible nearing of positions. But one of two diplomats told The Associated Press that Schmid has reported "no progress" to EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who in turn is informing the six powers ? the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany ? of the results of the meeting.

EU officials said Thursday that Ashton will be talking to top Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili soon on the next steps. That potentially could result in agreement on a new six-power Iran round.

But the second diplomat said the lack of progress at the talks Tuesday could more likely mean that Jalili and Ashton agree only to have another Schmid and Bagheri meeting ? or an even lower-level encounter, again at the experts' level.

The two diplomats are familiar with the results of the Schmid-Bagheri talks. They demanded anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the substance of that confidential meeting.

Both said that with armed conflict as a possible alternative the talks would continue on some level, a view that was also voiced Friday by Iran.

"The talks will be continued until they reach positive and constructive conclusions," said Ali Akbar Velayati, an adviser to the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in comments cited by the semi-official ISNA news agency.

The six are offering to ease restrictions on airplane parts for Iran's outmoded, mostly U.S.-produced civilian fleet as well as technical help with aspects of Iran's nuclear program that cannot be used for military purposes.

Beyond wanting Tehran to stop enriching to a level just steps away from the purity needed to arm a nuclear missile they also demand that it shut down an underground plant where such work is taking place.

Iran in turn says that its right to enrich is enshrined in the nuclear nonproliferation treaty ? and therefore sees demands to curtail higher enrichment as contravening international law.

It also refuses to shutter the underground facility, which it has fortified in anticipation of possible attack. Israel has warned of possible air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and the United States has said all options are on the table should negotiations fail to bring Tehran to compromise.

Iran is under four sets of U.N. sanctions and other embargos. An EU ban on Iranian oil came into full effect July 1, adding to U.S.-led sanctions on Iranian crude and further cutting into exports of OPEC's second-largest producer.

That revelation comes in a letter from Google Global Privacy Counsel Peter Fleisher to Steve Eckersley, head of enforcement at the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (or ICO), in which Fleisher says that Google is still in possession of a "small portion of payload data collected by our Street View vehicles in the UK." Fleisher adds that Google "apologizes for this error," and says that the data was discovered after an extensive review of its Street View data that it has been conducting in recent months. For its part, the ICO has acknowledged that it received the letter, and notes that the data was supposed to have been deleted in December of 2010, adding that "the fact that some of this information still exists appears to breach the undertaking to the ICO signed by Google in November 2010." Goodyear Trying to Put Soybean Oil in Tires

Three years ago Yokohama introduced its dB Super E-Spec, a tire which uses oil from orange peels as an ingredient. The company touted it as a better tire for the environment; though the orange oil displaces just a small amount of petroleum in the tire itself, it improves the life of the tires and the car's fuel economy.

Goodyear has also been looking for an Earth-friendly new additive; two years ago the company began researching a processing aid that could replace petroleum in case prices rose too high. Recent tests have shown Goodyear?s Innovation Center might have found the replacement it has been looking for: soybean oil.

By replacing petroleum with soybean oil, Goodyear says it can save up to seven million gallons of the non-renewable stuff each year. In addition, soybean oil turns out to be a more effective processing aid. Mike Kernf, manager of global materials technology for Goodyear, says that tread life could be increased by up to 10 percent.

So far Goodyear won't say exactly how much soybean oil it plans to use in each tire, or how, citing the need to keep industry secrets. But the company says it sees no technical hurdles in mass producing soybean oil tires.

Gamers Against Bigotry Fights for Online Gaming Without Bigoted ...

Today, I?m doing something different with the Daily Fix. It?s still Wednesday but the post will not be ?Off the Wall? like many of my usual write-ups.

Many gamers today play online and many gamers are used to hearing all types of foul language when playing online. Several gamers do not have a problem with foul language, however there are few gamers that can tolerate being insulted with racial slurs and sexist comments. Unfortunately, this has become the norm with online gaming and speaking for myself, I rarely play online with random people and if I do, most of the time, random people are muted. To be clear, I?ve never experienced any type of direct hate speech online but due to all of the horror stories I?ve read and heard from my friends, I just didn?t want any part of it.

Like most of mainstream society, I have internalized the stereotype of the online gaming community but now it?s time for things to change and this is why I am glad that Gamers Against Bigotry (GAB) exists.

Just for clarification, GAB founder, Sam Killerman has no problem with trash talking or curse words since that is what makes ?pwning? opponents so fun. The problem lies with the insults that are targeted at specific groups of people as it promotes a bad image of gamers and the gaming community. Many times, bigoted insults get thrown around with little thought to it?s impact .

As the GAB initiative gained steamed, the website was photo-bombed with vile images and 1,500 signatures supporting the petition below were removed by hackers:

As a gamer, I realize I contribute to an incredibly diverse social network of gamers around the world, and that my actions have the ability to impact others. In effort to make a positive impact, and to create a community that is welcoming to all, I pledge to not use bigoted language while gaming, online and otherwise.

The Damson Dene Hotel, which touts itself as the perfect destination for a ?peaceful break away from it all? in England?s picturesque Lake District, is making quite a noise for replacing the Bible with ?Fifty Shades of Grey? in its 40 guest rooms.

The steamy novel ? part of a trilogy by author E.L. James ??has become a worldwide blockbuster thanks in large part to the graphic sex scenes that have its main characters engaging in bondage, sadomasochism and other exploits.

Damson Dene owner Jonathan Denby, who bought the hotel from a Methodist group 10 years ago, said he had been pondering for a long time what to do with the Gideons Bibles that had been placed in the rooms by the previous proprietors.

He decided that in a modern secular society it was ?wholly inappropriate? to keep a religious book in people?s private bedrooms, so the search was on for a replacement.

?I was thinking originally of putting in a book by Ayn Rand ???Atlas Shrugged? was my first thought,? Denby told NBC News.

?(But) because everybody is reading ?Fifty Shades of Grey,? we thought it would be a hospitable thing to do, to have this available for our guests, especially if some of them were a little bit shy about buying it because of its reputation.?

The choice to offer ?Fifty Shades of Grey? was done purely for fun and just because the novel is so popular, not for any deep philosophical reason, Denby added, noting that he himself has not read the book.

The switch was made earlier this month, prompting cheers, jeers and lots of media attention.

Not surprisingly, the local vicar has been an outspoken critic. The Rev. Michael Woodcock ??the parish priest at St. Mary?s Church in Crosthwaite, where the hotel is located ??declined to comment for this article, but he told British media that the hotel?s decision is just a gimmick.

?It is a great shame that Bibles have been removed from rooms and very inappropriate to have been replaced by an explicit erotic novel,? Woodcock told The Westmorland Gazette.

?The Bible remains a source of comfort and inspiration that many people do find helpful.?

The hotel has also received plenty of public feedback criticizing the move, most of it from the United States, Denby noted. The Gideons Bible isn?t as common in England as it is in the U.S., he added.

?People in the States feel much more strongly,? he said. ?We?ve had quite a few e-mails quoting the scriptures to us and suggesting that it would be a good thing to put the Bible back.?

Still, most guests ?have loved? discovering ?Fifty Shades of Grey? in their rooms, Denby said. The hotel is also accommodating those who want to read the Bible, updating its guest handbooks to let travelers know that copies are available at the reception desk.

?We?re not disposing of the books. We?re keeping them and if people want to borrow them, then they?re very welcome to,? Denby said.
