China to hold Gu Kailai murder trial on August 9: sources

BEIJING (Reuters) - China will open the trial of Gu Kailai, the wife of ousted Communist Party Politburo member Bo Xilai, on August 9 on charges of murdering a British man in November, two sources said on Friday.

Gu will face trial in Hefei, provincial capital of Anhui in eastern China, although she is accused of murdering businessman Neil Heywood in Chongqing, a southwest municipality that her husband Bo turned into a showpiece for his controversial policies. Bo was dismissed as chief of Chongqing in March.

Aaron Sorkin -- Denies Firing 'The Newsroom' Writing Staff

Diane Haithman and Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline TV coverage.

UPDATED: Deadline never reported this or even picked up these media reports. Good thing, too, because today Aaron Sorkin?characterized them as ?unsourced and untrue??that he had fired nearly all of the writers on The Newsroom. Sorkin brought up the matter during HBO?s presentation before anybody asked. Sorkin also said there is no truth to the second part of the rumor: That one of the writers, Corinne Kingsbury, is the only writer who was spared because she is Sorkin?s ex-girlfriend. The Daily?repeated the?rumors first, followed by?The Hollywood Reporter and others suckered into distributing them. (No wonder The Daily is firing nearly 30% of its staff?) The inaccurate stuff ?got repeated all over the place,? Sorkin said.

?The writing staff was not fired, OK? Just seeing that in print is scaring the hell out of the writing staff. They are acting very strangely, they are coming to work very early ? I want the old gang back. It is a fantastic group of men and women to come to work with.??Sorkin did cop to a couple of staffing changes he said were made at the end of the season but said that they were mostly promotions of two writers assistants to staff writers. (While he did not address that, there are 2-3 writers from Season 1 of Newsroom who are not coming back.) Sorkin also stressed that Kingsbury is not neither an ex- or current girlfriend: ?She is on the staff for the same reason everyone else is on the staff.? He added: ?I think she is at the beginning of a very exciting career and I would hate for this rumor impact her career or follow her around for the rest of her life,? Sorkin said of Kingsbury, adding jokingly: ?That?s Kingsbury with a ?g?.?

He added that he had no girlfriends, either previous or current, on the writing staff. (HBO at the time the rumors broke tried to throw cold water on them with a statement that said: ?Every year each show reassesses the needs of its writing staffs. This process is nothing out of the ordinary.?)

Sorkin did say the show is in the process of adding paid consultants and said he would identify them when they are officially selected. He said their input could be ?anything they want,? including their own personal stories or political expertise. After the session, Sorkin said of the consultants: ?They?ll bring real experiences that they?ve had working in a newsroom. They?re also going to bring a political perspective that I don?t have. I?m hiring some really bright, interesting conservative minds who work in conservative politics who will help me bolster some conservative arguments for those moments when we talk about politics.?? When asked whether the show was weaker this season because it lacked the conservative voices, he said: ?I don?t, I don?t.?

Sorkin was also asked to address the decidedly mixed critical response to the show. ?For sure we all know that there were critics who did not enjoy watching the first four episodes,? he said, to laughter. ? And there were critics that did. Obviously you?d prefer the praise be unanimous, but any time people are talking this much about a television show, it?s good for television, for people who watch TC, and people who work in TV.?? He added that at HBO the entire season is in the can before the first episode airs so he cannot be tempted to tinker in order to please the critics.?After the session, Sorkin said of his critics: ?I don?t want to have an adversarial relationship with the press. I get that there are people who don?t like the show and are writing honestly about the show. But I don?t want to have that adversarial feeling.? He added: ?I have to write the way I write and not write to change other people?s minds, because if 999 people like the show and one doesn?t, I will abandon those 999 people and try to get that one person to like me.?

Sorkin also spoke about the frequent criticism that his women characters, instead of coming across as smart and savvy, are ditzy.? ?I completely respect that opinion but I 100% disagree with it. They are every bit the equals of men. We plainly see them being good at their jobs.?? He added that they evidence qualities of selflessness, caring, ambition and other qualities. If those are present, he said, ?you can have them slip on as many banana peels as you want.?

Sorkin, who appeared on the panel with star Jeff Daniels and executive producer Alan Poul, said the show would continue to focus on real news stories that are 9 to 18 months old. The panel also revealed that this Sunday?s episode will deal with the night Osama Bin Laden is killed.

Power Law Tail Economics And A Physics Way To Redistribute Wealth

Physicists doing economics has gotten a bad rap - a practically worldwide recession will do that - but it's no reason to give up, especially if you are of the world view that redistributing wealth is better than a free market.

Models designed to represent taxation and wealth redistribution could be adjusted to create a target level of wealth distribution, according to mathematical physicists from the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy.?

Maria Letizia Bertotti and Giovanni Modanese propose a mechanism of individual interaction of economic agents involved in wealth redistribution on a one-to-one level as a means of understanding their collective macroscopic behaviour. They rely on an analogy between agents interacting in markets and well-known models of particles interacting in gases. ?The findings could lead to numerical simulations of potential wealth distribution scenarios playing out over the long term and could be used for policy decision making.?

Scared yet?

One of the unique aspects of their approach is that their model differentiates groups of individuals into a finite number of separate classes, related to their level of wealth. In the family of models they devised, the number of individuals in each class varies over time due to the payment and redistribution of taxes. They have thus created three distinct scenarios by varying the parameters of the general framework governing wealth dynamics.

The authors found that some families of models exhibit power-law tails, and some do not. Power law tails represent the part of a society consisting of a limited number of individuals who have the most wealth. Several simulations suggest that the diversity of saving propensity among the individuals plays a definite role in the formation of fat tails where a greater number of individuals enjoy high levels of wealth.

The findings of this study could ultimately help examine how the spread of individuals varies among classes when the taxation rates relative to different income classes are varied. Or the results could help devise the most desirable taxation rate to achieve a given distribution of wealth.

Hate Siri all you want ? it?s still the future

I recently penned a quick piece on Apple?s (AAPL)?Siri and Google?s (GOOG) new voice command support in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, explaining that while there are undoubtedly issues to iron out, services like these are going to change the way we interact with devices. But people are still fed up with Siri, and rightfully so says?David Pogue in the latest issue of Scientific American. ?We?re used to consumer technology that works every time: e-mail, GPS, digital cameras,? he wrote. ?Dictation technology that relies on cellular Internet, though, only sort of works. And that can be jarring to encounter in this day and age.?

Pogue goes on to say that while we have grown accustomed to things that just work, people are not seeing?the forest for the trees. These technologies are only just emerging, and we shouldn?t ?throw the Siri out with the bathwater.? The virtual assistant portion of Siri works very well and the dictation portion will get there soon enough.

?Free-form cellular dictation is a not-there-yet technology,? Pogue notes. ?But as an interface for controlling our electronics, it makes the future of speech every bit as bright as Siri promised a year ago.?

Gmail for iOS adds option to save photos, becomes a smoother operator

Gmail for iOSGoogle's Gmail app for iOS has been docked by some potential adopters for feeling like a poor cousin to other native apps. It may be worth revisiting: the 1.3 update has just arrived with a much-requested ability to save common image attachments to an iOS device's photo collection. Should that not be enough, Google has smoothed out animations and scrolling for iPhone and iPod touch owners. The new version has pushed live for everyone, leaving just a quick download between us and saving our parents' vacation photos for posterity.

Aerosmith's Tyler: "American Idol" job "not my cup of tea"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock singer Steven Tyler said he "loved and hated" his two-year stint as a judge on "American Idol" but admitted the TV singing contest was "not my cup of tea."

Tyler, who announced in July he was quitting America's most-watched entertainment show after two years as a judge, told Rolling Stone magazine that he took the job partly to wait out an internal feud in his band, Aerosmith.

"It was something to do while the storm blew by, to be honest," he said in an interview in the upcoming August 2 issue.

"I loved it and hated it. It was a great job, I sat next to J. Lo and I made a ton of money. It was a moment in life and it became larger than life," he added.

Tyler and singer Jennifer Lopez, who is also leaving the show, were brought onto "American Idol" two years ago after the exit of acerbic British judge Simon Cowell.

The Aerosmith rocker said he had come under pressure from producers to fill the nasty-judge role vacated by Cowell.

"The show's about kids and what you do to nurture their talent. They wanted me to take the piss out of the kids and I don't have that in me. That's not what I'm about. That's more about that other guy. Not me," he said.

Aerosmith -- made up of frontman Tyler, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford -- have since patched up years of internal strife and have been working for months on their first album of new material since 2001's "Just Push Play."

The new album, "Music from Another Dimension!" will be released in November.

Fox television and "American Idol" producers announced last week that pop singer Mariah Carey would take one of the vacant seats for the new season starting in January. They expect to announce a second new judge in a few weeks' time.

Stagedom: An iPhone App To Follow Updates From Your Favorite Musicians

stagedom_homeShahar Nechmad, who previously founded and ran web analytics company NuComony (which was acquired by LivePerson), has a new startup whose pitch, at least, is a little more fun. Stagedom aims to be the app where people can find new music, tour dates, videos, and other updates from their favorite artists. Nechmad admits that music tech is a pretty crowded field right now, but he says that particularly on mobile, no one has really created a unified experience to get everything you want from your favorite musicians ? think of the way that most bands once treated Myspace pages as the de facto websites, offering everything that a fan might need. Now, a band's content is usually scattered across various social sites and services like YouTube. Some musicians create their own apps, but as Nechmad notes, "No one want to install 15 different apps." And on the artist side, you want to reach your casual fans too, not just the diehards who are most likely to install your app.
